Movie Ad for Beyond the Rocks

This is a great newspaper advertisement for the 1922 film, Beyond the Rocks, starring Gloria Swanson, and of course Valentino.  Many of these ads were found in newspapers and magazines.  As I have stated in previous posts, these are fantastic collectibles, they are reasonably priced and often depict unique artwork from the film.  This is another great example of one of those ads.

Mid Week Pictorial Featuring Valentino

This is a magazine/supplement called Mid Week Pictorial, "News of the World in Pictures."  This was published weekly by the New York Times.  Valentino graced the cover of this publication numerous times.  This is a fantastic partial profile pic of Valentino.  This is a unique magazine that would need to be added to any collection.

 

Photos from The Son of the Sheik

There areso many promotional photos from Valentino's last film from 1926, The Son of the Sheik.  Many of the basic stock photos of Valentino are from this film.  I have included some of the more common photos along with a few you do not see too often.  One, is a fantastic side profile photo, that I just recently came across.

The Eagle Movie Poster

This is a unique poster from the 1925 film, The Eagle.  I am unsure of it's origins, along with what country it is from, or for that matter if it was actually used to promote the film.  It has a bit of an abstract feel to it.  It is possible it was used for a film festival, or it simply could just be an artful interpretation.  If anyone has any information, feel free to contact me.  I  simply wanted to share it and add another piece to the list of various collectibles out there!

1930's/40's Film Advertisement for The Son of the Sheik

This is a advertisement for the 1930's/40's re-release of The Son of the Sheik.  This ad shows costs for purchasing the film.  16 MM with sound $300, 16MM Silent $150, 8MM Silent $75.  This was distributed by Nu-Art Films Inc.  The film is tagged as "Sensational Revival by Popular Demand!"  A unique  advertisement piece.

87th Anniversary of Valentino's Passing

87 years ago today, Rudolph Valentino passed away in a New York hospital.  He was in New York promoting his latest film, The Son of the Sheik.  This film would go on to be a great success, quite possibly due to the  fact that it was his last film.  Valentino was hospitalized while in New York, many speculated it was a promotional ploy to draw attention to Valentino and his new film.  Unfortunately, this was not the case.  Valentino passed away at 12:10 on the afternoon of the 23rd at the age of 31.  The outcry from fellow actors and especially fans would spread worldwide.  Remember Valentino today, I will leave you with a one of his poems from Daydreams:  "Powerless"  When I see a look of sadness, In the eyes of You, Thoughts of grief akin to madness Surge my being through.  Am I then so weak and helpless, That I can not send Even shadowings of sorrows To their deserved end.

The Young Rajah Cine Revue

This is another great example of a French Magazine called Cine Revue.  This magazine produced some great, dramatic covers depicting Valentino.  This particular one features Valentino from the 1922 film, The Young Rajah.  Yet another great example of 1920's magazine with Valentino on the cover.

Cobra Sheet Music

Ok, so I am a sucker for Books and Sheet Music.  This is a rare piece from the 1925 film, Cobra.  The sheet music has dates on the bottom, Thursday July 1st.  There was a Thursday July 1st in 1926, so I guess it's possible this movie theater did not screen them film until then.  Regardless, I think it's a uncommon piece, most likely not overly valuable; however, I am on the look out for.

 

Signed Copy of Monsieur Beaucaire Book

This is a rare example of a movie tie-in book signed by Valentino.  The book is Monsieur Beaucaire, which was made into a film Valentino made in 1924.  The inscription reads: Cordially Yours, Rudolph Valentino, Strand Theatre, August 16, 1924.  I assume this was obtained by a fan or possibly the theater owner.  Valentino may have been there promoting the film.  This is a fantastic example of Valentino's signature along with an inscription.  This would be a fairly valuable piece.

Lobby Card from Beyond the Rocks

This is a lobby card from the 1922 film, Beyond the Rocks, starring Valentino and Gloria Swanson.  Original Valentino Lobby Cards are very sought after, most are very valuable.  This particular card is fairly rare and is not often seen.  I believe the value of this card is greater than most also due to the fact that it is Swanson and Valentino, Swanson was one, if not the biggest co-star in all of Valentino's films.  Hence this card duel star-power collect-ability.  This would look great hanging from my Valentino wall....if there were space left.

Rare Photos from The Young Rajah

Here are 5 photos from 1922 film, The Young Rajah.  These are great photos from a film that was lost for decades.  The version we have today is only a partial copy, with various scenes still missing.  Many of these photos are not seen too often.  There is one photo I found courtesy of Frau Wulf.

Russian Blood and Sand Movie Poster

I came across this poster on a rare Swedish Movie Poster site.  One of our readers, Karena tells me it's in Russian and I have to agree with her.  This is a poster from the 1922 film, Blood and Sand.  This poster appears to be all hand done and does not have information for Paramount Studios.  If this is a poster that was all hand done for a theater showing, it would be an interesting find.  I would think it would be difficult to attach a value to it since it is not a mass produced item.  I find it to be a wonderful piece!

Rare 1927 Italian Book

This is a over-sized paperback book from 1927.  The book is in Italian and is titled Rodolfo Valentino by Ivan Pissilenko.  The bottom right side of the cover reads: Life Loves.  I would be curious to find out the contents of the book.  I wonder what the Italian take on Valentino was, just a year after his death.  Overall, this is a great early example of a rare Valentino biography that is not often seen, especially in the U.S.

1925 Girl's Cinema Magazine

This is a magazine or more like a newspaper booklet called Girl's Cinema.  Valentino was often on the cover of this magazine.  This one is dated September of 1925.  The cover reads: Rudolph Valentino's Latest Picture, The Story of "A Sainted Devil" Inside.  A Sainted Devil was released in November of 1924.  So, it surprising this made the cover almost a year later.  Two months after this magazine was published The Eagle and Cobra was released.  This is not an extremely valuable magazine; however, the fact it is A Sainted Devil item helps increase the value.

Italian Son of the Sheik Photoplay Book

This is a wonderful Italian edition of The Son of the Sheik, or Il Figlio Dello Sceicco.  I first saw a photo of this posted on Instagram.  After a little searching I found it on ABE, which is a great place to find books.  This is an awesome edition of the photoplay with a dust cover that depicts Valentino from The Son of the Sheik.  This is another example of an overseas item with different artwork than the American edition.

Under the Double Eagle Sheet Music

As many of you know Sheet Music is one of my Valentino addictions.  When I first start out collecting, it was one of the cheapest collectibles to buy.  Often times they are from the 20's, with vibrant colors and unique artwork.  This particular example I would guess to be from the 60's or 70's.  It's titled "Under the Double Eagle."  This is not a common piece, but not extremely valuable either.  Simply another piece of sheet music to add to the collection.

A Sainted Devil Glass Slide

This is a rare glass slide from the 1924 lost film, A Sainted Devil.  I really enjoy finding items from lost films.  This is the first glass slide from 'A Sainted Devil" I have come across.  Items from A Sainted Devil are very sought after and very collectible, this one is no exception.

100,000 Page Visits!

We have officially passed the 100,000 mark for page visits to the Valentino Collectibles Blog!  I really enjoy working on the blog, (when I have the time), along with all the input, comments, and contributions all of you have made!  I still have many items from my personal collection to post, along with hundreds of images I have obtained over the years from various websites.  I thought I would include a screensaver of Rudy from The Sheik.  I found this on a screensaver website a few years ago called ClassicSavers.com.  Thanks again for visiting the blog and for all of your contributions and interest!

Brazilian Paperback Valentino Biography

This is a rare biography on Valentino from 1970.  The cover simply translates to Retrospective, Rudolph Valentino.  It is a laminated style over-sized paperback book.  The book was published in Rio de Jeneiro.  I am a big collector of Valentino books and sheet music, this is the only copy I have ever come across.  Not to say there are not thousands more out there, its just that I have never seen them. The book is in Portuguese  and has many great photos of Valentino.  I have included a photo of the front and back cover.  This is a great, rare find!

Color Advertisement for the film Cobra

This is a wonderful color advertisement for the 1925 film, Cobra. I believe this ad to be Scandinavian.  This is very similar to the American version; but, slightly different.  This is one of these items that would look great framed.  This is such a great film, I feel it's Nita Naldi at her best, as she "Vamp's" Valentino!  This would be a great film to watch in Hollywood with fellow Valentino fans!  One of my favorite parts of this film is when Valentino is introduced:
