This is five photos from the recently discovered film, Beyond the Rocks, co-starring Gloria Swanson. This is an interesting film, not only because it starred Valentino and Swason, but because there were so many costume changes for Valentino in this film. I do enjoy more of the obscure photos from the less popular films.

love the leg kick in the 4th picture, lol...like oh no!!
ReplyDeletei was reading the credit's in Donna Hill's the silent idol, seen your name as a contributor :)
I just bought that vintage first photo, can't wait to get it.
ReplyDeleteSwanson thought a lot of Rudy according to her bio. They shared a love of horses and were often riding buddies. My favorite is when she described his accent as "delicious"!
Yes, I sent a few photos to Donna for the book, I was glad to see a few made the book. Many of the photos in the book, I had never seen before. It is amazing just how many different photos were taken of Valentino. It is also amazing how many new photos you will come across you have never seen before as a collector, no matter how long you have been collecting.
ReplyDeleteAna, that is funny you purchased that photo. I saw it on ebay and thought it was great. I check ebay almost everyday to check for items for my collection, as well as items for the blog.
ReplyDeleteThat is great about Gloria Swanson, there is a Hollywood biography series, on VHS, I do not believe it is on DVD. Anyway, the VHS on Valentino is also on Gloria Swanson. I highly recommend it. Maybe I will try to dig mine out and post it.
If you're referring to Kevin Brownlow's doc series part 6 "Swanson and Valentino" you are correct, it is fabulous. I think it's still only available on vhs however. Gloria Swanson's book Swanson on Swanson is also great and it has lots of good mentions of Rudy. It's easy to find online and very inexpensive.
ReplyDeleteHaha, yes, that is the one I am referring to. It really is a great series. I also really like the narration of James Mason, he has such a cool voice and really "sells it," when he is discussing their lives and careers.
ReplyDeleteI have heard that Swanson on Swanson is a great book as well, I have never read it myself. I may need to check it out for the Valentino references alone.
I have the Swanson on Swanson book, the ebay seller added it as a bonus in my collection.
ReplyDeleteI can pass it along.
Hey Lindsay, Thanks so much for the offer, I actually have the book myself, but have never read it. I am strange in that way, I collect books; but, I am not a big reader, I know weird. In the case of Valentino I will have to make an exception. If you go to my profile and email me directly, let me know if there are any Rudy books you are looking for, I have a few extras, I can send them your way. Thanks again so much for your offer!
ReplyDeleteI collected quite a few now, I heard some rumors of a new biograph on Rudolph Valentino from Donna Hill.
ReplyDeleteI found a surprise newspaper clipping of Rudolph with his sister, Natacha's aunt. it's a good photo but it's newspaper quality from 1930 lol!
Lindsay, I have not heard anything about a new book from Donna, that would be interesting. I do know that one of Valentino's relatives is currently working a book from the family's perspective, which I am very excited about!
