Rudolph Valentino Newspaper from 1926

This is one of many newspapers with featured headlines of Valentino's death. This particular one is unique because it is the Evening Express from Los Angeles. Valentino died in New York, his body was transported back to Hollywood via train. This headline reads: "Crowds Meet Valentino Train in California Cities." There is a drawing of Valentino that seems to have him in the same formal clothing he wore to Mae Murray's Wedding a couple months earlier. There are thousands of newspaper headlines with Valentino's death as the lead story. They are fairly sought after, especially the ones with photos of Valentino. This one is unique because it is an article about the train arriving back in Hollywood with his body.

This is a 1926 Daily News from the time of Valentino's death. His death made headlines across the world, along with this funeral service in New York and Hollywood. Original newspapers from his death is not as common as you may think. This is a classic Grandma-drawer item, as I call it. I feel many people saved the papers; however, over 84 years later many did not survive. They are not worth a fortune, some can still bring up to $100 or so, that is on the extreme high end.

This is a newspaper from 1926, the New York Evening Graphic. The headline reads, "Rudy Rallies at Point of Death." During Valentino's hospitalization, his condition went from poor to good, then he suddenly died on August 23rd. Most newspapers offered daily information on Valentino's condition, most was front page news, this one offered a full front page image. Newspapers, around the time of his death tend to be moderately valuable simply because many 90 year old newspapers are no longer left in existence, especially in good condition.

This is a great newspaper-style magazine from August of 1926 called the Evening Graphic. This is a commemorative issue after Valentino's death. The cover depicts a very strong photo of Valentino with a white collar around his neck. There are many magazines and newspapers depicting Valentino, especially after his death; however, all are still very sought after, especially ones from the 20's and the early 30's.

Rudolph Valentino Bigamy Newspaper Headline

In 1922 Valentino married set designer Natacha Rambova. Valentino's marriage from his first wife Jean Acker had recently ended in divorce. California law at that time stated a person could not remarry until one year after the divorce. Valentino was arrested on bigamy charges, he spent three days in jail and was fined $10,000. This is a newspaper headline discussing the turn of events.

Newspaper Discussing Valentino's Funeral

This is a newspaper with the headline, "75 Hurt in Rush to See Valentino." The mob of people in New York became unruly the first day of the funeral. Some people claim the crowsds and riots were a publicity stunt. I do not think it is unrealistic to think a few thousand people got out of hand to see the biggest movie star in the world, lay in state. This riot caused police to file a single file line to pass by Valentino's body at Campbell's Funeral Home in New York.

Italian Son of the Sheik Newspaper Magazine

This is a gorgeous oversized Italian newspaper style magazine from 1938 depicting Valentino and Vilma Banky from The Son of the Sheik. The name of this newspaper is call Piccola. This is not a common magazine to find.

Valentino Newspaper Poster

This is a Newspaper Poster from the Chicago American Newspaper from 1968. This is a poster of Valentino from the film, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." This is one of many star posters included in this series, other stars included: James Stewart, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, James Cagney, James Dean, Nancy Sinatra, The Mamas and the Papas, and The Monkees. These are not too difficult to find, they are difficult to find in good condition.

Newspaper Ads from Cobra

These are four Newspaper Ad for the film, Cobra. Notice a couple of these ads do not feature the image of Valentino. Some of these ads also say, "Valentino as you like him." Cobra was released in 1925, his first film since Monsieur Beaucaire from 1924. Many of Valentino's fans disliked Monsieur Beaucaire. There were not used to seeing Valentino in white powdered wigs and in frilly period style clothing. Fans wanted to see Valentino with his hair slicked back, seducing a woman. These simply did not get Monsieur Beaucaire. Critics of Valentino had a field day with this film. Beaucaire was the first film Valentino did after walking out on his contract with Paramount. He and Natacha felt the studio was exploiting his in dumbed down movies. Valentino and Natacha felt they wanted to do something artisitc, the result: Monsieur Beaucaire. Since Beaucaire was Valentino's first film since Beyond the Rocks in 1922, his fans were eager for him to star in a movie again. This film was not wanted they wanted to see.

So, when promoting Cobra they had to let people know that this was the Valentino people wanted to see, slicked back hair, an Italian playboy seducing women. I find it surprising some of the ads did not feature Valentino, there must have been worries from the studio that Valentino's career might be in jeopardy. This was obviously not the case.

When Valentino died it was the top headline in nearly every major newspaper in the US and around the world. Days before newspapers reported he was recovering, then suddenly he died. This was the first major movie star to die at the height of his career. These papers are a few examples of the headlines on August 23rd, 1926.
