Photos from Uncharted Seas

These are two photos from the film, "Uncharted Seas." This film is no longer in existence, or I like to refer to it, "lost." This film was made in 1921, one of five Valentino starred in that year, it was made after The Four Horsemen. The film also stars Alice Lake as well. Items from this film are very difficult to find as well. Often, this tends to be the "forgotten" Valentino film. I hope someone finds it over the next few years.

  1. Alice Lake was in The Four Horsemen? Rex Ingram's wife Alice Terry played Julio's love interest Marguerite in that one I believe.
The photos are wonderful, I think Valentino looks best in contemporary clothes. I hope this film is out there and surfaces while it can still be saved. Collecting is great, but to me nothing beats enjoying his work on film.

  2. Alice Terry, thanks for the correction. I changed it in the post. Some of these posts I make at like 1:oo in the morning, I guess I need to pay closer attention, thank you!

I really hope they find this one; however, the one I really hope they find is A Sainted Devil. My understanding is they have found a small part of the film, but, that is it, I would still like to see whatever is available. Actually now that I think about it there is a small snippet of the film on one of the Valentino documentary's out there from the 70's or 80's, I think it is from the one called, The Legend of Valentino. They show a quick scene with him and Nita Naldi, but, do not acknowledge which film it is from.

I agree with his films, I have not had a chance to watch any in a while.

  3. Okay, this is really RATTY of me but I can't help myself, so please dont stop responding to my comments, okay? You're correct in stating that Miss Lake is his co-star in "Seas", she is just not the same as Miss Terry in "Four Horsemen."
Now that I got that off my chest, I had no idea that any part of "A Sainted Devil" existed. I've read that he does some of his most diverse acting in it.
Even though I have all the dvds, I've recorded several onto my dvr from tcm. Some of the new music scores are fantastic (i.e. Four Horsemen). I fall asleep to this one ALL the time. Its spectacular. My husband loves it too. (Not really).

  4. You are absolutely correct! Thank you, the last thing I want to do is to have incorrect information on here. Besides confusing the two Alice's I often confuse Uncharted Seas and The Conquering Power, don't ask me why, but I do. Alice Terry starred in The Conquering Power as well.

I totally agree with you about the music. I am unsure if you have seen The Sheik with the musical score by Roger Bellon, it is fantastic. The Sheik happened to be the first Valentino movie I saw, with that musical score and I feel asleep to it as well the first time I saw it. It was on AMC, back when they showed classic movies with no commercials. Honestly, I have not updated my library in a while, most of Valentino's films I own on VHS, I only have a few on DVD.

  5. I think the one you are referring to is the 1992 Paramount release of The Sheik with the Bellon score. I've lately watched my dvd of the 2002 Image Entertainment special edition. Even though the print is better on this, the score is mediocre. I'm definitely going to dust off my vcr and watch it again. Thanks.

  6. It is interesting you mentioned a different version of The Sheik. I have this magazine article that shows photos from The Sheik, where the end scene shows Valentino in a white suit, instead of his Sheik costume. The Paramount version does not have this scene, does the copy you have include this scene, I have wanted to find a copy with this "lost" ending, let me know.

  7. This Image version is a double feature that includes The Son of the Sheik as well as some shorts as special features. The Sheik ends with Rudy in bed with a bandage on his head being nursed by Agnes Ayres. No white suit.
Now in The Son Of The Sheik the ending is that great action sequence on horseback where he appears in a white riding outfit that is different than the Sheik garb in the rest of the film, but I think this is the original ending. I LOVE The SOS, he is absolutely thrilling and so full of cockiness and bravado in this. Incidentally, this dvd is a great deal cause you get both films plus the 88 Beauties,The Sheik's Physique And Pathe funeral footage in special features.

  8. I will have to check out his DVD, sounds like a great deal.

I have a couple of photos of Valentino in this white suit I will post, so you can see what I am talking about. It depicts him and Agnes Ayres, you can tell it is from The Sheik and not SOS because of how young they both look. I guess it could be from an ending they filmed and they cut out, I am unsure.

  9. Guess what my friend? You did it again , 'cause that second photo is from "The Conquering Power" and not "Uncharted Seas". Betcha. HaHa.

  10. See, that is the help I need, I have only watched The Conquering Power a couple of times, I did not remember that from the film, I pulled the photo. I will relist it at a later date under the correct title. Thank you for your help!

  11. That still is from the part in the movie where he goes to Martinique to find his fortune. Definitely post it again, because it's one of the few stills of him looking scruffy and rugged. Thanks for putting up with me.

  12. No, thanks for helping me out. My problem is that I have watched The Sheik, SOS, Blood and Sand, Cobra, and The Eagle over and over and over. The other films I have only watched a few times. I need to re-watch the others a few more times. The first batch was the first movies I owned and watch the hell out of them.
