Lobby Card from Blood and Sand

This is one of my favorite lobby cards from Blood and Sand. It is a very colorful card that features Valentino and co-star Nita Naldi. The card depicts one of my favorite scenes from the film where she seduces him by playing the harp. Many of the desirable lobby cards seem to be more scarce. Most are already in collections out there, that is, for the ones that have survived over the past 90 years, which is how old this film is. Lobby cards such as this can be quite valuable, even though they are a fraction of the cost of an original poster which can easily bring five figures.

Newspaper Advertisement for The Eagle

This is a great newspaper clipping, advertising The Eagle. It is from the re-release, because it states modernized with music and sound. I like the three photos of Valentino in the ad showcasing him in three different costumes / scenes from the film. These clippings are a great, reasonable way to get your collection started, they also look great framed if you room on your wall, which of course I do not!

1925 Cuban Cobra Magazine

This is a magazine from 1925 depicting Valentino from the film, "Cobra." The magazine is called Carteles, which translate to Posters. These magazines are not too common. I do know that Valentino appeared on the cover of this publication various times. This is not an overly valuable magazine, but you still have to add it to the collection.

Beyond the Rocks Movie Poster

This is a colorful, vibrant, classic movie poster depicting Gloria Swanson and Valentino from the film, "Beyond the Rocks." This is a rare, and hard to find poster from the 1922 film. There are so many different variations of posters that exists for each film. It is amazing just how many of them I have never seen before, including this one. I also find it interesting the poster has Henry Clive's signature on the bottom, the same artist who was responsible for the Canco Tins, one of The Sheik posters and many other items as well. This is truly a fantastic piece.

These are two fantastic photos depicting The Strand theater when The Sheik was playing. There is an original movie poster in the framed stand out front along with various lobby cards, window cards and etc. I am unable to see if the all the items are from The Sheik or not, I just find it to be a fascinating photo. The second one depicts a fan or theater worker dressed in his best Sheik garb posing by the poster, I would guess a fan; but, who knows. I really find these photos to be fantastic, you just do not see these types of photos around too often.

Assorted Rudolph Valentino Busts

I found this photo on an auction house website a while back. These are various busts and possibly wall hangings that had been auctioned off...I always miss these things. Side note, I cannot tell you how many times I have gone into an antique mall or old country collectibles store where I inquire about any Valentino items and they proceed to tell me they had this or that and just recently sold it, oh well, I digress. This is a wonderful collection depicting Valentino from The Four Horsemen, The Son of the Sheik, and possibly The Sheik. Some appear to have been mass produced while other could have been privately made. If anyone has any further information, please let me know. I believe this lot sold for a fairly substantial amount. If they are truly vintage I would believe them to be fairly valuable.

This is a rarely seen Glass Slide from the film, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. As stated in earlier posts, many glass slides are difficult to find in today's market that are not cracked or broken. They were often hand painted, which can lead to many different variations of the same slide. One other note on this item, not all of the marketing merchandise featured Valentino, it is great to see him featured on this piece. The photo is from emovieposter.com

1995 Birthday Rudolph Valentino Fan Club Booklet

This is a 100th Birthday dedication booklet from 1995. The booklet is called Buon Compleanno, which is Italian for Happy Birthday. The Booklet was produced by Patricia Lampinen who used to run a Valentino fan club back in the 90's. There were about 30 or so members, including myself. She asked the current members to send birthday messages and poems to her to create this 100th birthday booklet. Even though this was simply a homemade item it is significant because there were only 30 or so created and it was created by one of many Valentino fan clubs over the years. This would be a desirable item to those who are now collector's who were not former members of this fan club and has to have one of everything out there.

This is a Lobby Card from the film, "Moran of the Lady Letty." All of the lobby cards from this film are black and white. Lobby cards from this film tend to be more difficult to find compared to lobby cards from some of Valentino's other films. This is one of Valentino's more obscure films; however, there are some great collectibles out there.

This is a hard to find magazine entitled "Allas Kronika." This magazine is from Finland and is dated 1925. The name of the magazine translate to "Everyone's Chronicle." The cover depicts Valentino from the film Monsieur Beaucaire. Even though the cover does not have vibrant colors, it would still be a desirable magazine to collectors/myself.

Rare Once to Every Woman Poster

This is a very rare poster from the 1920 film, "Once to Every Woman." This is one of Valentino's early films and unfortunately remains lost. Valentino made a total of 6 films in 1920. Dorothy Phillips received top billing for the film. It is my understanding that Valentino did not have a big part in the film, so it is unique to see him prominently displayed on the movie poster. I do not believe this film was re-released after his stardom. This appears to be an original poster from 1920, since his name does not appear on the poster. This would be a fairly valuable poster due to the rarity of items from the film, along with the demand from collector's to own something from his early days, I.E. pre-Four Horsemen.

Halloween Mask from The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

This is a random item, that you do not see too often. My guess is that it is from the late 60's, or most likely the 70's. It is a cardboard mask of Valentino from The Four Horsemen. It has two small holes cut out where the eyes are. I know there is a Theda Bara edition as well. I am unsure if this product was homemade or mass produced. I find it to be one of those very random items that collector's who have to have one of everything would need to buy.

Valentino appeared on the cover of these magazines many times. This particular one advertises a 16 page Art Souvenir from The Son of the Sheik. These are wonderful magazines and are fairly desirable.

This is a rare version of a poster from the 1922 film, "Blood and Sand." The poster is from Belgium. This is another example of a different variation from the U.S. release. Many overseas collectible items depict different art work or different movie scenes. This would be a valuable and hard to find movie poster.

5 Photographs from The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

All of these photos showcase Valentino in his Military uniform. I find it very interesting that most of the photos of Valentino from The Four Horsemen are of him in the gaucho costume. Granted the most famous part of the film was the dance of the tango; however, he is only featured in the gaucho costume for a few minutes in the film. With that being said, enjoy the photos of these rarely seen photos.

1922 Personalized Autographed Photo

This is a fantastic example of an autographed photo of Valentino, it is dated 1922. He personalized it to Hazel, The Will O'the Wisp. Thanks to Fiferstone for the update on the term Will O'the Wisp, which I originally misread as wisdom. There are many terms to define this saying, the most interesting I found was "Ghost Lights," or "Orbs." Knowing that Valentino had a spirit guide and had an slight interest in the occult makes this autograph very unique. When I save photos to later post on the blog I often save any information, I have with the photo, in this case I saved the name, Hazel Beamer Miles. I assume this is the Hazel he addressed on the photo. I was unable to find any information on her. I am unsure if she worked in the business, or was simply a friend of Valentino's. If anyone has any further information, let me know.

Glass Slide from Camille

This is a Glass Slide from the 1921 film, "Camille." Notice the top billing for Nazimova. This film was released in between The Four Horsemen and The Sheik. The Sheik was Valentino's next film, which really propelled his stardom. These Glass Slides are fantastic collectibles and tend to be fairly valuable in good condition.

A Society Sensation Newspaper Advertisement

This is a re-release newspaper ad for the 1918 film, "A Society Sensation." Considering the film is packaged with the 1924 film, "Wild Oranges," my guess is that it is from 1924. It reads, "He Made Love An Art on the Screen," and "Note: This will prove to you that Rudy always was the most dazzling of lovers." Even though the studios were attempting to cash in on his early films where he had bit parts, which they did, this is not a very impressive ad for the film. Almost a second billing ad if you will. Again, these clippings are not extremely rare; but, I find them to be great collectible pieces that are very reasonable to obtain.

Fantastic 1926 Painting of Rudolph Valentino

This is a painting from Alan Hale Sr.'s collection. I am unsure who painted this, if anyone has any further information please let me know. I can tell you that Alan Hale Sr. was a well known actor and director from the teens to the 50's. You may know his son, Alan Hale Jr. as the Skipper from Gilligan's Island. This is one of the best likenesses I have come across in the form of a painting, especially from when he was alive. This is a fantastic, one of a kind piece that would be highly valuable and highly sought after.

Update on this item from Tracy: The only info I have on this was about 2 or 3 yrs ago I was contacted by Allan Hale's granddaughter asking me info on it. I had a 1930 or 31 movie magazine photo of Allan Hale standing in front of it. Mr. Hale co-starred with him in Four Horseman, and also was friends with Natacha. She had wanted him to direct The Hooded Falcon. The painting was not given to him by Rudy. The painting is easily identifiable as the "Last Portrait" photo, (cover of Emily Leider's book) That portrait was done in spring 1926 in Los Angeles, and that was his last sitting in Los Angeles, thus why it's called that. He did go on to do more in Chicago and NY which was his last. Being that it was done based on that photo makes it impossible to have been given in 1925. I believe Mr. Hale most likely commissioned this as a keepsake/memory after Rudy's passing in August 1926 The painting was auctioned off in Pasadena shortly after his granddaughter had contacted me. It was lumped in with a lot of old English furniture in the auction. I doubt it went for much. Hopes this helps with some of the true facts behind the piece.

This is a magazine called Screenland from 1924. It says Seattle Washington on the top of the magazine along with the date. It appears to possibly be a newspaper supplement. The magazine depicts a unique cover depicting Valentino from the film, "A Sainted Devil." I like how this appears that Valentino was cut out and pasted on the cover. This is a great example of one of those unique rarely seen magazines.

This is a Theater Program from the Lyric Theater from the week of January 11th, 1926. This program is for the film, The Eagle. Notice the photo is not from The Eagle. I am sure many theaters used templates over and over for the same actors; but different films. These are not too rare, the more desirable programs are from well known theaters.

This is a wonderful Liberty Magazine from 1926 that depicts a couple looking at a Rudolfo Hollidino, AKA Rudolph Valentino poster. I am unsure why the fake name; however, I think that makes it more funny. The man is saying "Aw, he's full of garlic." Which was a common male reaction to Valentino in the 20's. I find this to be a great comical Valentino item.

Lobby Card from Cobra

This is a wonderful Lobby Card from the 1925 film, "Cobra." This is a great scene from the film where Valentino leaves the restaurant through the backdoor only to see Rosa's Papa hiding to confront him; however, Rosa's Papa cover is blown by a couple of children. This is a rare and wonderfully colorful card, this would be a great addition to any collection, especially mine.

Parts of the film was supposed to filmed in Spain; however, it was filmed on the back lot of the old Paramount Studios. Regardless of where it was filmed a superb performance by Valentino, Lila Lee and Nita Naldi. These are all great photos, one of my favorites is the one where he has a cigarette in his hand. I just bought it in Hollywood.

84th Rudolph Valentino Memorial Service

I attended the 84th Rudolph Valentino Memorial Service at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood. The service included many guest speakers, a few songs, and a video of a Gloria Swanson interview from the 70's where she discussed Valentino. I really enjoyed getting to attend the service, to meet other Valentino fans and collectors and to visit Valentino's crypt.

Valentino's crypt was decorated with a bevy of red roses. There were two glass cases of Valentino collectibles. The main room where the service was held included photos of Valentino and a life-size wooden hand painted likeness of him. If was really fantastic to see such a large turn-out for someone who died 85 years ago.

This is a lobby card from the original release of the film, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." This is a very dramatic scene from the film. There are no star billing on these cards and the colors are a bit tame or muted. Even with that in mind, these cards still bring a premium in the Valentino lobby card world. I would definitely not turn one down.

Valentino Speaks The Wisdom of Rudolph Valentino Book

This is one of the newer books out about Valentino. It is titled, "Valentino Speaks The Wisdom of Rudolph Valentino by Wayne Hatford. If I am counting correctly, this is the fourth book dealing with Valentino and the occult / afterlife. I find it fantastic to see all of the new books out pertaining to Valentino. This is a copy of The Motion Picture Director magazine from July of 1926. The cover depicts a fantastic depiction of Valentino and Vilma Banky from the film, "The Son of the Sheik." This is an excellent example of a 20's magazine, pre-August 1926. I have never come across this magazine, the unique cover would lead me to believe it would be a bit more valuable than most magazines from the period.

This is a Vintage Valentino Playing Card. I am unsure of the date, my guess is the 20's or 30's. The card is the two of hearts and depicts a photo of Valentino along with his name. This particular one is in poor shape. I do not have a great deal of information about the card, I would guess it is from a deck of movie star cards. This is a unique and interesting item.

Here are five photos from the film, "The Son of the Sheik." When you think of Valentino's films in terms of his success and stardom, it could be compared to a Hollywood story within a Hollywood story. He gained enormous popularity from The Sheik, five years later he makes a sequel to the film to re-bolster his stardom and it ends up being his last film. Not just because I am a fan; but, I feel that SOS was advanced for it's time and was a preview of what Valentino could have offered to films in the 30's.

This is a very rare French Movie Poster from the film Blood and Sand. I find it fascinating that so many different posters and other collectibles exist out there that I have never seen before. This poster happens to be one. Although I will say the man on the poster that is suppose to be Valentino looks nothing like him. I think the artist was looking at a photo of Harry Houdini when he drew Valentino.

This is a great French magazine from 1926 depicting a scene with Valentino from the film, "The Eagle." This is a fantastic photo from the film, it makes him look like a Russian leader of some sorts. I feel The Eagle is one of Valentino's best performances. It tends to get over shadowed by both Sheik films and The Four Horsemen. Back to the magazine, this is not a common item; however it will not cost you top dollar to add it to your collection. I am still looking for this one myself.

This is a color card from the 30's depicting Valentino from the film, The Eagle. I am unsure if the card is a tobacco or a chocolate card. Regardless, this is a great variation of a card depicting Valentino. As with most of these cards they are not overly valuable they just need to be added to the collection.

Rare Italian Sheik Felt Doll

This is a very rare doll that depicts Valentino from The Sheik or The Son of the Sheik. The doll is estimated to be from 1925. So, this could be a doll made in advance of the film or it could be made from The Sheik. Regardless, it is Valentino in a Sheik outfit. It is believed to be made from the Alma Doll Company from Italy. This is a super rare piece, not many of these dolls were produced. This would be a great addition for the Valentino that has just about everything else!

Even though the film was recently found, the print is not a complete copy. Therefore, there are many photos that do not appear in the film. There are many great items from the film out there.

Again, I have no idea, just a guess. It is a unique poster that depicts a small scene from the film along with a mad, scowling depiction of Valentino. A very unique and hard to find poster!

This is a magazine from 1924 called Cinema. It is a French Canadian magazine that depicts Valentino on the cover. They seemed to have slightly colorized the photo of Valentino on the cover give him the appearance of a red hue. As with most of the magazines I post, this one is not overly valuable, but just one more that would need to be added to the collection. With that said, I am still looking for this one myself.

Book Personally Owned by Rudolph Valentino

This is my 600th post and for the milestone posts I like to feature a special item. This is book that was personally owned by Valentino. The book is titled "The Flame of Life," by D'Annunzio. A few amazing things about the book. The book was most likely owned by Valentino before he became a big star. The year 1918 is wrote inside the book, which is most likely around the time he owned the book. On the inside cover of the book, Valentino signed his name, with the spelling Rodolph in a red pen of some sorts. Since he owned this before he amassed his fortune there is no Valentino bookplate in this book, instead it contains the book plate of Erich Von Stroheim! Stroheim, the silent movie director and later actor in various films including one of my favorite films of all time, Sunset Boulevard where he played Max the butler. I am unsure if he owned the book before Valentino or after, my best guess is after. There are also a couple of phone numbers wrote on the first page, one name is Priscilla, the other is Holly. Could this be silent movie actress Priscilla Dean, who knows?

If that is not enough,the book has a few pages where Valentino doodled and drew pictures. He practiced his monogram with RV and RG on one page, on another he drew a car, an engine, and what appears to be a hood of a car or a shield. Even though the condition of this book is on the rough side, it is truly a one of a kind item that not only features his autograph, but his drawings and his monograms and Erich Von Stroheim's bookplate. This is a truly fantastic piece any collector would love to own!

Lobby Card from The Conquering Power

Rare Photo from the film The Cheater

This is a rare photo from the 1920 film, "The Cheater." Valentino was not credited in this film, he was listed as an extra. This was the first film he was listed as an extra since Alimony from 1917. This is the first item I have seen anything depicting Valentino from the film. This photo has a sticker of the back that states I need to credit The Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Even though this is not an original photo it is very difficult to find.

This is a magazine from Finland called Filmiaitta from 1926. The cover depicts Valentino and Vilma Banky from the film, "The Son of the Sheik." This is a wonderful overseas magazine depicting Valentino on the cover. Many of these magazines had orange covers, or depicted color photos, those tend to be a bit more desirable than the plain black and white cover. But, who am I kidding we would all still like to have it no matter what the color of the cover!

These are five photos of Valentino with Natacha. It is rare to see photos of her smiling, many people think it was a reflection of her personality, which I might have been; but, which was indicative of the time. The first photo is a fantastic photo of Valentino, Natacha, and Alberto. Valentino is sporting his European goatee, I think it is just a fantastic photo.

This photo depicts the sultry Nita Naldi along with the couple. I love Natacha’s facial expression in this photo. To me her face it saying: she not only looks much better than I do; but, she looks better with him than I do!

This is a photo of the couple from the Mineralava tour where they performed the tango from Valentino’s film, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

This photo was taken as Natacha was leaving him. It is said they put on a show for the camera; but, Valentino was devastated.

Exquisite Painting of Rudolph Valentino

This is an absolute exquisite painting of Valentino as Duke de Chartres from the film, "Monsieur Beaucaire." This image was painted by artist, Gaston Albert Lavillier in 1925. Valentino actually sat for Lavillier so that he could paint this portrait. This is a fantastic example of a one of a kind item that would be invaluable to an art or Valentino collector.

Re-Release Poster from The Delicious Little Devil

This is a re-release poster from the film, “The Delicious Little Devil.” This film was originally released in 1919. Once Valentino’s stardom took off, the studios re-released some of Valentino’s early films. They edited the films so that Valentino’s parts were repeated in the film, to make it appear he had larger parts in the film. Once re-released they produced posters, lobby cards, and marketing material that featured Valentino, even giving him billing in the film that he originally might have had a 5-10 minute part. Even though this poster is a re-release it is from the early 20’s and still very valuable and of course sought after by collector’s.

I am still mad I let these get away a few months ago when they were on ebay. They are highly sought after and fairly valuable as well. This is a memorial button and ribbon presumably from 1926, celebrating Valentino. The button depicts a drawing of Valentino with his name, at the bottom it reads: Born 1895, At Rest 1926. The ribbon reads: In Memory. I am unsure or the origins of this item. This could have been created by the studios or simply by peddlers in New York who sold them to the crowd as they waited to pass his body in Campbells. I wish I had more information about this item; however, I find it to be a unique piece that was most likely cherished by his true fans who was around in 1926 and lived through the time of his death.

This is a fantastic movie poster from the film, "Cobra." I looked up the dates and days of the week, this is an original release poster from 1925. Cobra is my favorite Valentino film, I would absolutely love to have this. I have never seen this poster before now. Note the photo of Valentino on the poster in a bow tie, a likeness not from the film. This was a way for the studio to market a film with Valentino where he was not in costume, just the great lover as an Italian playboy. This is a absolute fantastic poster, this is one I will definitely be looking for, the biggest problem is trying to afford it, if I ever find it!

These are five photos from the film, "Moran of the Lady Letty." This was the first of four movies Valentino starred in during 1922. This film co-starred actor Walter Long, seen in the first photo getting choked-out by Valentino. Long co-starred with Valentino in three of his films. He played Captain Slippery Kitchell in Moran of the Lady Letty. You may also recognize him as Omar the Bandit in The Sheik, and Plumitas in Blood and Sand.

Valentino, The Unforgotten

Valentino, The Unforgotten was a released in 1938 by Roger C. Peterson. Peterson worked at what is now Hollywood Forever Cemetery and wrote this book based on his experiences with visitors to Valentino's Crypt. This book was then re-released by Tracy Terhune in 2007. He stated that very few copies of the original first printing was released because of a warehouse fire that destroyed many of the copies. This making the original release more difficult to find and obviously more valuable. If you are able to come across a copy of the original, it is common to find the book signed by Peterson. Definitely one of the more rare Valentino books out there, especially based on the number in existence.

This is a fantastic autographed photo depicting Valentino from the film, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." I like the fact that he dated this photo as well, "1921." He signed this photo "R. Valentino," he often signed either R. Valentino or Rudolph Valentino. These were the most common variations. I have noticed in many of the signed letters out there, especially to people he was acquainted with he signed R. Valentino. Anyway, this is a fantastic photo and would be very valuable, especially to collector's and fans such as all of us.

Early Spanish Rudolph Valentino Tobacco Card

This is a rare, early Spanish Tobacco Card. The top of the card reads, "Artistas y Peliculas, which translates to Artists and Movies. This is a colorized early tobacco card that features "Rodolph Valentino." This card is quite valuable since it appears to be pre-Four Horsemen. The earlier items tend to be more valuable and more desirable. I have a fair amount of tobacco cards, but have never seen this one before. So, needless to say, this is one I am on the lookout for. So much to find!

This is a rare French movie poster from the 1922 film, "Blood and Sand." It appears to be a window card, which is simply a horizontal poster than is a bit smaller than a normal size movie poster. This is yet another example of a wonderful overseas poster that depicts colorful, unique artwork. A poster such as this would easily bring 5 figures at an auction, so needless to say I am not the proud owner of one, but always looking for someone who wants to part with one for a few bucks.

These are five rare photos from the film, "Uncharted Seas." This is one of two Valentino's lost films he had a starring role in, the other is The Sainted Devil. Besides this being a lost film, it seems any memorabilia from this film is also very difficult to find, even the still photos from the film. One of these photos appears to be a "behind the scenes," photo where someone is helping Valentino smoke a cigarette. All of the items associated with the film, are rare and very desirable, I am always on the lookout for items from this film!

This is a Lobby Card from the film, "The Eagle." Imagine walking up to a theater in 1925, where the studio was selling the name Valentino along with his latest film, The Eagle. Posters, Lobby Cards, Window Cards, possibly programs. The theater had to be decked out in Valentino items, a collector's dream. I do have a few photos of theaters like this I will post at a later time. The value of half of those types of items by today's standards would be staggering. That is a lot of history for an 11x14 86 year old piece of this thick-stock paper! By the way, this card as all original Eagle lobby cards, except the dead card are very desirable and very valuable.

This was in the Debbie Reynolds collection and was just auctioned off for $210,000! This is an absolutely amazing price for an authentic Valentino worn costume. These are five photos from my favorite Valentino film, Cobra. This was one of two films Valentino made in 1925, the other being The Eagle. This was the only film that I know of that Valentino actually played an Italian, which to me made his role very believable. Nita Naldi is fantastic in this film, you love to hate her character. 4 Different Movie Posters from The Son of the Sheik

These are four different posters from the film, "The Son of the Sheik." I was contacted by a reader named Amanda that owns these four posters. She was looking for information, including the estimated value of these posters.

The first two posters read: "By Popular Demand!" at the top of each poster. I know The Son of the Sheik was re-released many times. The biggest re-release being in 1937. If anyone knows more about the time frame and value of these, please comment or email me. Update: I received some great information from Jim on a few of these posters. The first one (Art Cinema), is the most common of the four, it is from 1938. The second one could be from the 50's or 60's since it has the same cover from the Irving Shulman book; however, both posters at the top read: "By Popular Demand," which could mean they are from the same time frame. We are still unsure about the second poster.
These two posters have similar font. The second poster, I have found out is from 1950. I have a newspaper ad with the same artwork for that poster. The horizontal window card, looks to have similar font, but, just as the first two, I am not 100% certain. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

These are five original photos from the film, Monsieur Beaucaire. This was Valentino's return film in 1924, he and Natacha asked wanted artistic integrity and artistic freedom in Valentino's films. Beaucaire may have had too much artistic freedom for some fans. All the same, the sets and costumes were very extravagant. The film produced some very desirable memorabilia for fans and collectors.

Monsieur Beaucaire Glass Slide

This is an excellent example of an original glass slide. The glass slide is from the 1924 film, “Monsieur Beaucaire.” The particular slide is cracked, which is very common for slides from this era. However, the crack does not distort the image. The vibrant colors of this particular slide would make this one more desirable and more valuable. I bid on this one on ebay and lost out, so if you won this recent auction, you outbid me! It was definitely a great addition to someone’s collection, if you get tired of it, let me know.

These are five different postcards from the film, “The Son of the Sheik.” Two of these are Ross card from Berlin; the other three are colorized cards. Postcards are a great way to collect some affordable items from the 20’s. Most are relatively inexpensive and easy to find. My favorites are the Beagles cards which have the art-deco raised frame around the card. Some of the original colorized cards tend to be desirable as well.

This is a Movie Weekly Magazine from 1924 featuring Valentino on the cover. The headline on the magazine reads: “Rudolph Valentino’s own story of his trip abroad.” Valentino was a common star of the cover of this magazine. This magazine was produced on a newspaper-style thin paper instead of a thicker stock magazine type paper. With this in mind, it is more difficult to find these in mint condition. These magazines overall are not highly valuable, but, still sought after by collectors, especially like me who have 2-3 and now are on the lookout for the rest of them.

Title and Lobby Cards from Camille

The first card is the title card from Camille. Traditionally there are 8 lobby cards in a set; each set has a title card which is similar to the movie poster, where it features the title and the stars of the film. The remaining cards feature the other stars and scenes from the film. Camille was another June Mathis film, that featured Nazimova. The film silently co-starred Valentino as can be seen from this title card. The studio wanted to feature Nazimova along with giving some exposure to their up and coming star, Valentino, which most likely Mathis has something to do with. This particular card, which does not feature Valentino is not as valuable to a Valentino collector as it would be to a Nazimova collector. In this case, for Valentino collectors, the second card would be more desirable. There is not a great deal of Valentino-Camille items out there, due to the top-billing of Nazimova. The items out there are fairly sought after and fairly valuable.

Assortment of Candid Photos of Valentino

I do enjoy the candid photos. I use the word candid loosely, candid photos to me are photos not from his films or non-studio poses. These are five great photos of Valentino outside of both of those arenas. The first one is a rare photo of Valentino and Natacha where Valentino has a mustache. I assume this was just before he grew out the goatee for their 1923 trip. Other photos include Valentino with his dogs, his horse, reading mail and a photo of him in his Four Horsemen gaucho outfit. I believe this photo to be from when he was out on the Mineralava tour where he and Natacha danced the tango in this costume.

Original Michael Back Burnt Wooden Art

I am not real big on homemade items, this piece is an exception. This is a unique round, wooden art piece from Valentino collector, Michael Back. Some of Michael's collection was featured in Jack Scagnetti's book, The Intimate Life of Rudolph Valentino. Besides being a huge Valentino collector, Michael has an artistic talent and over the years has created many Valentino items. This is a great example of one of his burnt wood pieces, featuring Valentino from The Sheik. This is a wonderful, unique item.

This is a Picture Show Magazine from 1923. This was a magazine / newspaper from the U.K. This particular issue features Valentino from three of his films: Blood and Sand, The Moran of the Lady Letty and The Young Rajah. The cover states the following: What is wrong with some pictures, a candid criticism by Rudolph Valentino. This was during the time Valentino walked out of his contract with Famous Players Lasky after The Young Rajah. He and Natacha talked a great deal about "artistic integrity" in his films. This would be a great issue to have to read Valentino's side of the story. There are many Picture Show's with Valentino featured on the cover; however, these tend to be difficult to find.

Spanish Rudolph Valentino Chocolate Card

The is a Spanish Chocolate card from the Amatller Chocolate company out of Barcelona. I believe this card was produced from the 1930's. The card appears to depict a color photo from the film, "The Eagle." While most chocolate and tobacco cards are not extremely valuable. I find them to be a wonderful collectible item from the 20's and 30's that you will not pay an exorbitant amount of money for.

This is a lobby card from the 1921 film, "Camille." This was the fourth of five films Valentino made in 1921. This film was released right before The Sheik. Alla Nazimova, a popular Russian silent star, was given top billing for the film. The set designer for the film was Natacha Rambova, this is where they met for the first time.

The lobby card, as all other cards from Valentino's films is valuable and highly sought after. This particular card lacks the vibrant colors that other films offer; however, it is still a wonderful lobby card. There are not a great deal of items out there from Camille.

These are five photos from the 1921 film, "The Conquering Power." This film, which was released only a few months after The Four Horsemen also co-starred Alice Terry and was directed by Rex Ingram, just as in The Four Horsemen. This is not the most popular Valentino film, the plot is a bit flimsy; however, a Valentino film all the same. My favorite part of the film, is when Valentino sports a three-o-clock shadow. Anyway, most of these photos are not too common, enjoy!

The Young Rajah Glass Slide

This is a wonderful example of a Glass Slide from the 1922 film, "The Young Rajah." As I have stated in previous glass slide posts, they were often hand painted and many did not survive over the years. Most of the ones that did survive are cracked or broken. 2010 Memorial Service Program

This is the program from the 2010 Memorial Service which takes place at Hollywood Forever (Memorial) Cemetery. The service has been held every year since his death in 1926, on the day of his death, August 23rd, at the time he died, 12:10 in the afternoon. It is the longest running memorial service for any Hollywood celebrity. My understanding is that the event can become quite a spectacle.

This year makes the 84th year of the service, I will be attending this year, the first year I have been able to make it out there, I am looking forward to the event.
